Redheads and Anesthesia

Are Redheads More Difficult to Anesthetize?

For a long time, redheads have been felt to be more difficult to put under an anesthetic than the regular population.  There is a common belief that they are hot tempered and more emotional and consequently require larger doses of anesthesia to keep them comfortable.

Earlier studies suggested this to be true but a recent, well done study has demonstrated the contrary.  This study performed in Australia revealed no difference in the requirements for anesthesia between redheads and other patients.

All patients have different needs based on their own characteristics.

Talk to your anesthesia provider before your surgery to determine what you require.
